100 word story

Single word prompt - Exhausted
Night had fallen hours ago faster and earlier than expected, yet I pushed on.  My back had even given up around the same time darkness fell and instead of throbbing in pain it had gone blessedly numb.  The sound of the shovel and of dirt flying back became rhythmic, scrape, whomp over and over again.  Soon it would be done just a few more feet to go. Yet the thought of what came next made me almost wish the dirt would continue on forever.  This may be exhausting but at least I didn’t need to consider what I was doing.

Writing Challenge

Prompt - What if you were invisible.
The first thought this prompt brought to mind is an old joke,
If I were suddenly invisible I would fly to Paris and beat the crap out of a street mime, it’s not very nice but imagine the applause he would get.
Had to do it.
Nearly 6 years ago something quite remarkable happened to me, I became invisible.  A lot of people may think and rightfully so that I’ve become a ghost.  I’m not so sure I am one.  See I can’t help thinking something else happened to me.
First of all I  believe dying would have left some sort of impression on me or at least a confused or questionable moment in memory and there is nothing odd I can think of in the days leading up to my disappearance.
I have nothing unresolved in my life no great missed loves, no unfinished business in fact my life up to that point had been excruciatingly dull; nothing to hold me back as a ghost.
I spent the first year being invisible almost convinced I had in fact  become a ghost but  somehow had  missed that crucial moment in memory to confirm I was indeed dead.  After having following first the police and then a private investigator my family hired to find me and seeing their results (diddly-squat) I’m convinced it was something else.
What I am or what happened to me I haven’t the foggiest idea but whatever it is seems to be quite permanent and I’m just trying to learn to make the best of the situation.
I’ve also found some ways to interact with the visible people of this world. I couldn’t do that at all in the beginning.  I’ve learnt people can hear me if I concentrate hard enough particularly when they’re asleep, the messages don’t always make it from sleep to awake with the clarity I would like but none the less it is something.
Animals also see and hear me apparently no different than any other person and actually make great go betweens when it comes to leading people to places and things I need them to see.
I can move small objects and the more I practice the better at it I become, I’m slowly finding myself able to move larger and larger items with less and less effort.  I’ve learnt not to do it in front of people though as it has the tendency to freak them out.
I stayed near home for almost the first two years trying to find out what had happened to me and of course worrying about my family.  My disappearance was very hard for my Mom in particular and I spent a lot of time trying to figure out a way to reassure her.
When I did leave they seemed to at least be accepting I was gone.  I don’t think I could have walked away from them if I hadn’t seen they would be OK. I still visit them from time to time when opportunity arises but these days I’m simply a traveler helping out where ever I can in whatever way I can.
Every time I come across a mystery I stick around for awhile and try to figure it out. I’ve become quite good at it and I always make sure what I learn gets to the right people so that those involved know what has happened to their loved ones. I’ve managed to help a lot of people over the years although for some I’ve been too late.
It’s a lonely existence but at least I’ve found a way to contribute to the visible people all around me. I admit I look for these mysteries in the hope that one day I’ll find someone else who just suddenly became invisible. So far I haven’t had any luck but that doesn’t mean I never will.
So until something new happens to me or I find another invisible person I’ll keep searching and helping out where ever I can.

2) Make a butterfly
3) Make a flower
4) Stuff in shoes to keep their shape during storage
5) Waldorf Window stars
6) Wrap breakables for storage

10) Great to start a bonfire with

That time of year has come around again, the time when the cool and summery gets exchanged for the warm and wooly. It’s time for the pretty sandals and painted toes to disappear in exchange for colorful socks and warm lined boots.

It seems such a short time ago that my favorite boots were put away. Cleaned and polished and left boxed in exchange for the lightweight shoes and strappy sandals of summer.

As I pull them from their box I get a whiff of leather and polish, they still look brand new, the toe still perfectly rounded thanks to the tissue paper stuffed down into the toe.

Without the tissue paper the leather would have smushed up and have stiffened into an unnatural looking shape, something rather uncomfortable to wear.  Without it these boots would be a rather disappointing favorite for the first few weeks of wear.

Instead thanks to this simple little use for a simple little thing these boots feel just as new and are as much a favorite every fall/winter season as the first one in which they were bought without having to spend several hundred dollars over again. Well worth a visit to the dollar store for a package of tissue paper.

Huh that really wasn’t the use I thought I was going to write about.

Writing Challenge Day

Once upon a time. The opening words of most any fairy tale. They have captured our imaginations since time out of mind. Fairy tales pass from one generation to the next, shaped by the storyteller and the audience. They evolve and grow with us, becoming what we need them to be.

This month’s writing invites you to be inspired by your favorite fairy tales. Retell the story with a little twist or let the tale be a springboard to something entirely new. Tell the story from a different perspective or imagine what might have really come after.

Prompt taken from http://doingthewritething.wordpress.com/, the story started off as a retelling of East of the Sun and West of the Moon from the Andrew Lange collection of fairy tales.

Once Upon a Time there was a beautiful castle which lay east of the sun and west of the moon in a land which was hidden. Inside this castle lived a prince who by day was a great bear and by night a man.

The only way he could stop transforming to a bear during the day was to marry a girl chosen by his family or he could marry a girl he loved from far off if he she would live with him for a full year never trying to see his face as a man or learning the reason why.

If she did this he would be able to bring her with him back to the castle but if she tried to see his face or found out why he would be whisked away. Then they could only marry if she somehow found the hidden castle herself before sunset a year later.

He left the castle and began his search to find someone and one day he saw the most beautiful girl he had ever seen, after watching her for a few days and seeing that she was also kind and caring he fell completely in love.

The girl was the oldest of a poor family and so he offered her a good life for her family the rest of their lives if she came to live with him for one year.  She wanted nothing more than to take care of her family and so she agreed.

They were happy spending days together as bear and girl and she came to truly love him but as she began to love him the need to see his face as a man began to grow.  So one night when the prince had fallen asleep she crept to his bedside and lit a candle and finally saw the face of the man she had come to love.

He awoke in the sudden candlelight with a start and desperately tried to tell her what she had done and how to find the castle but was barely able to tell her the castle was east of the sun and west of the moon before he was magically carried back.

The prince hoped that the girl would somehow find him but as the year came to an end she still had not found him and he was resigned to marrying the girl chosen by his family. The day of his wedding shortly before sunset a rumor reached him that a beautiful girl dressed in rags who claimed to be from a far off land was trying to enter the castle to see him.

The prince ran to the main gate of the castle and saw the girl he loved; she had searched for a full year and had found him just in time. He swept her into his arms just as the sun slipped below the horizon and so was able to marry the girl he loved instead and they lived happily ever after.

Writing Challenge Day

Write about your favorite recipe without writing about what is in it:
I found my favourite recipe or at least my current favourite recipe on a weekend which found me and my husband hosting two small dinner parties. As I was making up menu plans I realized just how tired I was of the same old standbys for larger groups and decided to try a few new things.
I stuck to familiar territory for one night and just added a little twist.  The second night I decided to take a bigger risk not only was I going to try an entirely new recipe for our main course  but a recipe for something which I had not had luck with in the past.
I had never had good luck with cream sauces I had always come close but the texture would be off, the flavor not quite right, something you couldn’t quite put your finger on that just didn’t work. I’d never made a sauce which was absolutely terrible or inedible but never one that encouraged second helpings or even a second chance.
I was set to try though, I had a recipe for Cajun Chicken Alfredo that looked as if it had potential, I had the ingredients and my fingers crossed. I knew that even though we may not have gotten past appetizers without disaster striking the guests we had were the kind that wouldn’t be put out if everything went to hell and I was forced to concede defeat and order pizza.
It was a recipe for 2 and I knew that meant the recipe would very quickly turn into more of a guideline but I was ok with that. I rarely if ever follow a recipe word for word in fact cooking with a recipe at all is fairly uncommon for me. I’ve never been afraid of cooking this way most of my best dishes barely resemble the original recipe they started out from.
I only realized just now as I’ve pulled out the original recipe just how far from the original I went even the first time around, today it only remotely resembles what I started with.  It worked though from that very first tentative taste I knew I had a winner and that there would be no pizza that night.
It honestly tasted as though it came from a good restaurant and was definitely enjoyed by all that night and any other night I've made it. It is now one of my favorite dishes, in fact a favorite of the whole family and requested quite often.

Writing challenge 11

In the Belly of the Beast. Write a short story in an unusual interior space, one with lots of interesting appurtenances and gadgets sticking out somewhere normally avoided or only seen by certain people, add a surprise.

A few minutes ago I had been getting ready to make supper, now I’m slowly making my way into the dark basement of my apartment building in a quest to find the maintenance guy.

I was making spaghetti when I suddenly found myself with a pot in one hand and the kitchen tap in the other.  Only problem was that I was standing several feet away from the sink and the rest of the faucet. The tap had just pulled right off and I have no idea how to fix it.  I managed to turn the water off, although not until after I and my entire kitchen were soaked.

Apparently the building guy is somewhere in the basement so that’s why I’m now heading that way.  I really wish he were anywhere else.  I don’t like the basement it’s just plain creepy.

It’s an older building so there are pipes and all sorts of metal things hanging from the roof and you have to duck every few feet, it has a damp musty smell and the lighting sucks.  It’s particularly bad in the winter, like right now, when the boilers are running.  They make strange hissing and banging noises when you least expect.  Add in all the small rooms and the little fenced in spaces which are storage for the above apartments and it becomes a dark and creepy maze.

The first time I went downstairs to put some things in my own space I nearly went running when I fell against the chain link separating my space from the neighboring one and a head went rolling across the floor. It was the head from a dummy but it took a moment for me to realize what it was.  For a moment I couldn’t help but think of silence of the lambs when they find that human head in a storage locker. I really wish I hadn’t thought of that.

I can hear something or someone else down here tonight, I sure hope it’s the maintenance guy. I keep hearing a rustling noise and I swear I just heard an evil chuckle.  I never realized how many little rooms are down here. Ok I’m beginning to get a little freaked out; it really is like silence of the lambs in here.  Maybe I don’t need a kitchen sink, I’ll just start washing my dishes in the tub.

Can’t be too many rooms left to check, there’s that noise again I’m seriously getting spooked.  Oh my god the lights just went out and someone screamed.  A loud blood curdling scream, what the hell do I do now? I can’t even see my hand in front of my face, oh there are lots of sounds now I can hear someone talking and they don’t sound very happy.  Should I stay here or try to find the stairs?

I came from the left I’ll go that way, the voices are coming from that way though. Oh man this is not right, I can’t just stay here forever. Ok here’s the doorway I can just make out the edge of it in the dark. Something just brushed past me and I scream just as the lights flick back on.

It’s the maintenance guy, his kids turned out the lights and it was one of them that screamed.  I forgot he lets the two of them tag along. I’m such an idiot…..

Writing Challenge 8

Write a story about an empty glass.

Mark scrubbed a hand over his face trying to stay awake and suppress the yawn threatening to overcome him.  He was so tired not only tired off the middle off the night phone calls that gave him no time to rest but the constant reminder that he didn’t really matter to this investigation.

He was getting all the jobs no one else wanted to do, the ones that weren’t going to do a damn thing to help solve this case.  He was stuck sitting here guarding an empty crime scene, the guy hadn’t come back to any of the other victims homes and he wouldn’t this time either.

A yawn managed to escape its way past his tightly sealed lips just as an older man with a cane and several heavy bags clumped his way up the stairwell.  He made his way past Mark giving a small nod and continuing on.  Mark watched as the man stopped and looked up at the next flight of stairs breathing hard.

Finally he started up on what were clearly some painful joints each stair a struggle, he almost lost his footing 3 stairs up and came very near to tumbling backward.  Mark sighed and pushed up from the chair he had been sitting on and called out “would you like a hand up?”

The man looked back at Mark with a smile on his face “are you sure I wouldn’t be pulling you away from something important?” Mark shook his head thinking again how ridiculous it was for him to be sitting here at 3 in the morning guarding an empty crime scene.  Besides maybe the old guy had heard or seen something that could help them out. “No not at all, here let me grab those bags for you”

“Why thank you son, these days you can’t be sure if even an officer of the law will assist an old man”   he said holding out the bags to Mark “I’m just one more flight up, I’ve been staying with my daughter the past week and I tell you she may love her old man but that girl can be hard to live with after a few days I can’t tell you how glad I’m going to be to have a little bit of peace and quiet……” He continued to talk as he slowly made his way up the stairs.

Mark instantly began to tune the man out and regret his offer of help, not only was this as boring as sitting and staring at a blank wall but if this guy had been out of town for the past week he wouldn’t have any new information about what had happened here the night before.

Mark reached the top of the stairs and called back ”which one is it?” he’d just set the bags by the old man’s door and get back to his post.

“Oh it’s the one on the right, I’ll grab those bags from you in just a second” As if anticipating Mark to ditch the bags and run he continued talking ”set them down and I’ll never get these old knees of mine to bend far enough to pick them back up” he chuckled.

Mark grimaced to himself guess he’d just have to wait.  He impatiently shifted from one foot to the other as the old guy finally made his way onto the landing and fished out his keys amidst a handful of tissue and promptly dropped them.”Oh dear would you mind” Mark bent over and swept up the keys “it’s the blue one” the man said Mark quickly identified the apartment key and unlocked the door rushing inside to set down the bags.

“I’ll just put these on the table” he said noticing as he walked the stale dusty odor in this room as if it had been a year and not a week since someone was last in the place.  He heard the door shut behind him and turned about to say he couldn’t stay to chat.
Instead he heard a distinctive click followed by a loud pop.  He recognized the sound instantly a revolver with a silencer and it had just been fired.  He dropped the bags in his hand and reached for his side arm discovering his own gun missing. A hot wet feeling was sliding across his chest and Mark suddenly found himself frozen in place barely able to breathe as he slowly collapsed to the floor.
He realized with sudden clarity that he had made what was certainly going to be a fatal error
“Tsk tsk, you should perhaps be paying just a little bit more attention” the old man scolded as he reached over Mark pulling his cuffs from his belt and quickly and efficiently snapping them in place on his own wrists.  “Pity there was a small detail I wasn’t able to attend to the other night and had to come back for it. I’m hopeful your friends over looked it as well or this whole night is going to seem rather pointless”

Mark struggled to breathe staring up at the old man who had most likely just killed him and realized now that he had been fooled by what was little more than makeup and a good act. Too late he had realized the absurdity of believing an old man would be arriving home so late. “What?” Mark managed to croak out; if he was going to die like this he wanted to know what could have been so important to come back for.

“What did I forget?” he asked, Mark could barely manage to nod in answer now.  “Well my dear boy I knocked over a glass last night which happened to fall into a little space behind the cabinets downstairs.  Silly really but I wasn’t able to get it in the limited amount of time I had left to finish my work and I’m quite certain my fingerprints are on it.  I wouldn’t want anything to jeopardize what I’m doing; I’m having way too much fun for that, so I must retrieve it before your friends do”

Mark moaned in protest his eyes slowly closing, he was even more tired now than before.  He forced himself to think of what had been done in the apartment downstairs and with dismay recalled that most likely the glass hadn’t been found as none of the furniture had yet been moved when forensics left for the day.

His last thought before drifting into the waiting darkness was the shocked realization that he was about to die because of an empty glass left behind a cabinet.

Writing Challenge #5

Write an introduction to a story beginning with the first line of a favorite book:
Once, in a kingdom called Delain, there was a King with two sons.  They were a great rarity in the kingdom of Delain for they were twins.  In Delain twins had been thought for many years to be no more than simple legend.
Although nearly unheard of the birth of twins was considered to be a wondrous blessing which would ensure the kingdom would be prosperous as long as both twins lived.
Due to the spectacular nature of not only a royal birth but that of twins the kingdom celebrated for a full year plus one day.
It was when the celebrating stopped that people began to realize a very important question had never been answered.  Which twin had been first born, which was to be their future King.
What the people had not been told was that no one knew, their mother Queen May who was a very petite and slender woman had experienced great difficulty with their birth and was unable to recall which child had been born first.
In those days only a single midwife was present when a woman gave birth and in a terrible turn of events she herself was no more able to say which child had been born first than was their mother.
In her excitement to inform the king and her kingdom that twins had been born she ran from her mistresses chamber as soon as possible and regrettably slipped in a pan of water she herself had placed near the queens bed.
She hit her head quite badly and never spoke another word; she became as helpless as the countless babies she had helped to deliver over the years.
So which child would one day become King and how would the kingdom decide?
It is a tale best told around a warm fire to dispel the chill against the sometimes terrible and sometimes wonderful events which took place between the day of their birth and the day in which one was crowned.
Pull your chair in close and I will tell you the story.
The first line is from a book called “The Eyes of The Dragon” by Stephen King it is a novel I have read and re-read to tatters.  It’s a simple story in some ways almost a child’s story but it has always captured my imagination and been a favorite for many years.
I had a very hard time only writing a beginning to this story as within a few words an entire story sprang to mind from beginning to end.

Writing Challenge #2

Write the beginning of a story using the starting line: You thought dragons didn’t exist

You thought dragons didn’t exist, but I have proof and every year for 4 weeks in the summer my sister and I live with one.  She has long red claws, smoky breath, evil green eyes and a downright nasty disposition.  I’m speaking of course about my great Aunt Myra, although I can’t imagine what’s so great about her.

I will never understand how my normally loving and kind parents think that sending us to stay in this smoky and dark cavern of evil is a good idea. My Mother has even managed to convince herself that we have fun.

I’ve tried to tell her we don’t but no matter how strongly I object she doesn’t believe me. Ally doesn’t think Aunt Myra is a dragon either but she’s just a girl and besides I know better.

I know she's a dragon because of something I saw one night last summer, it was just one week before it was time for us to go home.  My suspicion thatAunt Myra was a dragon in disguise was confirmed, now I KNOW what she is.

Ally and I had been sent to bed early because Aunt Myra was having guests over but I wasn’t tired and besides I had to see what in the world they could be doing in the garden on such a windy night with a storm on the way.

As soon as Ally had drifted off I snuck out of bed and made my way across the bedroom we share every summer and down the dark winding staircase.  I crept my way over the cold stone floor of the kitchen to the dark window which faced the garden and slowly pulled myself up to peek over the sill.

I saw………………

This prompt brought to mind the wonderfully imaginative and sometimes suspicious nature of a little boy. I leave it to you to decide if what he saw through the kitchen window was proof his great Aunt Myra really was a dragon or if it was something he misconstrued to fit his theory.

Writing Challenge #1

In exactly 50 words use all five of the required words:

Mailbox
Outlaw
Train
Reply
Collectively

We agreed collectively that dropping our reply in a mailbox wasn’t personal enough.   We would take the train and deliver our message in person.  We probably should have asked his messenger for the location of the hideout before we shot him. As an outlaw he would be hard to find.
I chose this one to start with as I know I can be a little long winded and I thought it would be simple enough to do.  Was a bit harder than I thought to hit exactly 50 words and make sense all at once.
