At the Beach - Flash Fiction

Emma kicked off her sandals and ran towards the incoming wave giggling as the first splashes of salt water swept around her ankles cool and refreshing on this sweltering hot day.

She turned back towards the beach to wave at her mother who was setting up a bright blue umbrella just out of the surfs reach.  As she lifted her hand another bigger wave came rushing past her pushing her off balance and making her stumble and fall into the turbulent water.

Suddenly the world was upside down the water stinging her startled eyes as she gasped not air but water and struggled to right herself. She fought against the receding water which was pulling her further out into the ocean.

Her sweeping hands suddenly came into contact with something smooth and silvery.  She screamed a line of bubbles and then suddenly felt her feet brush against the soft sand and she rolled upwards desperately trying to plant her feet against the waters rushing force.

Emma pushed her feet down against the smooth sand and suddenly found herself standing in water which barely reached the top of her knees.  She looked down and saw dozens of small silvery fish swimming around her ankles.

Emma looked towards her mother who was now standing facing the water’s edge a hand lifted to her creased brow a slightly worried frown on her face. Emma ran through the receding wave towards her mother laughing “Come and play with me Mommy the waters great!”
