Folklorama

Celtic Ireland

Folklorama which is the largest and longest running multicultural festival in the world is currently on going in Winnipeg.  It is one of my favorite summer activities and something I look forward to each year. We always have a lot of fun and besides being entertaining it can be very educational as well.

Each year during the first two weeks of August schools and community centers across Winnipeg are transformed into pavilions each of which represents a different and unique culture. Whether Serbian, Ukrainian or Caribbean these are all cultures that make up the broader landscape of Canada. Each pavilion includes a cultural display, foods relating to the area and a show of traditional dance and music.

Scotland
With 46 Pavilions this year it is quite literally impossible to see each and every one.  There are 3 show times each day for each pavilion and even if you made it to 3 different ones each night of the festival you still wouldn’t see them all.  Also due to the logistics of travel time between pavilions and finding parking getting to 3 in one night isn’t the easiest task.

I have fun at Folklorama every year and I wish we had more time for it this year. As it is we have only had time to make it to one so far which was Scotland last night.  I enjoyed it we actually haven’t made it to the Scotland pavilion before and I do love the sound of traditional Scottish music, yes bagpipes and all.

There are those that would say being such a young country Canada has very little history and culture but personally I feel that we celebrate all these individual cultures not in spite of being Canadian but because we are.  Each one is a part of our history and as such Canadians can in some ways say that the history and cultures of the entire world is our own.
